Task

An arts magazine needed an article about how to break a big art project into manageable steps.

Challenges

  • Magazine staff knew that their readers were intimidated by project management or viewed it as a skill that a “right-brained person” couldn’t do easily.
  • Although I was experienced with the arts and educated in project management, polymer clay was a new medium for me.

Process

I consulted with magazine editorial staff to get specifics (style guide, topics, and techniques that had to be included) and interviewed several artists about their project management approach. I then collaborated with polymer specialists to get their feedback on polymer clay terminology or concepts I might need guidance on.

Results

You can read the “Big Feat, Small Steps” by Kate Hennessey in The Polymer Arts magazine. My background in project management came in handy and brought good feedback from the editor.
